“Phoenix came into our lives when my mother was in terminal care. They treated her with respect and kindness and went beyond what, at times, I would have expected. Timely and caring. I would recommend them to anyone who needs assistance. They treated Mum like they would their own mothers!”
Approximately 3 years ago I was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer it came as a shock initially, I’m thinking this is for old people (men) then I remember l was 75 years old.
I attend the Oncology department at Northampton. A hormone injection is recommended every 3 months; I am then put on a Radiology Course of 5 blasts per week with weekends off for “good behaviour” this treatment lasted for 15 weeks making 75 blasts in total. It was after approximately a year that I was then put on a course of Chemotherapy which was 15 cycles over 45-week period after this was completed. I was put onto Chemo tablets sadly whilst on the tablets I managed to develop Cellulites which had a negative effect on my legs. Gradually this illness went away. About a month ago I was feeling quite odd, whereby I was not coherent. My wife contacted the Chemo Emergency Assessment Bay and was told to ring 999 for and an ambulance was sent out for me. I was in the hospital for ten days. I have to say the staffs were excellent, but every day in there my ambition was to be out and get home! When finally, I was discharged I was told that now I was going to be cared for at home, that included visits from the district nurse, and they checked the accommodation and recommended a walking frame and a hospital bed that was able to be changed into different positions and the next step being “carers”.
My first thought was a bunch of “Florence Nightingales”, with candles at the ready. I asked the nurse what they would be doing as I was classified as being very vulnerable. They would be coming in everyday up to 3 times depending on my needs. In my case they would take care of all of my needs which were as Follows: Washing, Toileting, Getting me out of bed in the mornings, putting me to bed at night if required and all that goes with it. The next step who will be my carers, when you think what they could be involved with, your unique toilet habits, wash you all over be in control of your shower. You would be exposing all your “Private Parts”. Were they going to be gentle or heavy handed? Would I lose all my dignity? How embarrassed would I be? All my questions were both answered and proved by my now permanent carer - Nelson Rabeca from Phoenix All Care Ltd I have been treated with the upmost care and respect that I could wish for!
